Supported Independent Living


Located in downtown London at DBIS’ Nigel & Rhonda Gilby Centre for Building Futures, services are available to individuals who require affordable housing and periodic daily access to staff support 7 days a week.  Support is flexible and individualized, allowing individuals to live as independently as possible with limited supports.  Individual sessions are scheduled in addition to having regular access to staff as needed.  Services are offered on a short-term, transitional, or lifelong basis.

Supported Independent Living (Gilby) Criteria:

  • Potential to improve through the rehabilitation process
  • Have identified rehabilitation and/or quality of life goals
  • Requires access to staff support a minimum of once daily
  • Ability to independently access the community
  • Able to prepare basic meals independently
  • Independently able to respond and evacuate during an emergency
  • Able to hold on to medications for one parameter
  • Tolerance for support sessions lasting at least 60 minutes
  • Safe without direct supervision for at least 24 hours and through the overnight
  • Family/caregiver commitment to participate where applicable
  • Minimum 18 years of age, no upper age limit

Discharge Criteria:

  • Achievement of rehabilitation goals as identified in the Individual Service Plan Achievement where criteria are met to transition to a more independent living environment
  • Low levels of participation (ongoing service planning and referrals arranged as needed)
  • Repeated breach of service conditions as outlined in the Service Agreement
  • Significant change in medical condition
  • Change in functional status where higher levels of support are required, exceeding available program staffing resources

Exclusion Criteria:

  • High level of risk of harm to others
  • Requires more than two hours of 1:1 support per day
